About the Book

Newmarket has a unique historic position as the acknowledged home of horseracing, yet until now no book has provided a definitive history of Newmarket Heath, the key figures who contributed to its transformation from an untamed wilderness to the world's finest racing ground, and the origins and development of the Jockey Club. This comprehensive and authoritative book is the first to trace this history from its early beginnings to the present day and to show how and why the sport of horseracing developed on the heath and spread globally from that base. All of the turf's greatest racehorses and the larger-than-life characters integral to the heath's history are included, while a great wealth of paintings and prints (which provide the only visual evidence of how racing was conducted and what Newmarket looked like) are illustrated and analysed.

Price

£35.00 + £5.00 postage and packaging (or Free collection from the Jockey Club Rooms)

Best Venue (town or city) at The Wedding Industry Awards 2016!

Best Venue (town or city) at The Wedding Industry Awards 2016!

We won!

The East of England Wedding Industry Award winners were announced at the Granary Estates in Woodditton on Monday 16 November 2015. This brilliant achievement is recognised by wedding industry professionals and couples alike and we are truly delighted to have won. The awards are voted for by couples who have married here within the last year and therefore it is increibly rewarding to realise how good the feedback must have been to have convinced the judges to put us in first place!

We now go through to the national awards event in London in January 2016 - wish us luck!

#WeAre350

#WeAre350

We are 350 and the associated logos and celebrations you may see (and be a part of) in 2016 is centred upon Newmarket and it's place in history as the spiritual home of British horseracing.

In March 1666 King Charles II returned to Newmarket for the first time since he was a boy. With him he brought a passion for horse racing that became the life and heart of the town. King Charles II was the pioneer in bringing modern day racing fixtures to Newmarket, as well as the new round course of three miles six furlongs, which is still used today for Newmarket’s oldest race, the Town Plate.

Over the last 350 years, Newmarket has been a part of royalty, aristocracy and regeneration. Kings and Queens have visited and the town has been associated with many famous people and horses including Walter Matthau, Winston Churchill and the great Frankel.
Newmarket has kept the racing spirit alive during two World Wars and The Jockey Club has invested millions into the town. To this day Newmarket remains the world's racing headquarters.

To find out more about how to celebrate the town's very special birthday with us visit the We Are 350 website here.
